Rivka Sassover Peled is a gifted painter, who has almost been hidden from the public eye, but is known and valued among her fellow artists. She is a graduate of Bezalel, where she teaches presently, and has been painting according to her own personal style along the years. The paintings are figurative, not merely the fruit of a blind imitation of nature, but reflect scenes and substance from reality that constitute Rivka's personal and emotional reaction to nature and the scenery. In this exhibit, there are scenes, the result of three short photographic journeys to two cities – Madrid and Tel Aviv. Having captured the passing moments in her camera, they become a picture which Rivka makes use of as a basis for her paintings. By going through a process of abstraction, she focuses on color and light and creates figurative paintings that contain very little detail. It is with extraordinary skill that Rivka succeeds to communicate a sense of the passing moment: a moment ago all was lit up and soon it will become dark, and the same twilight creates a colorful and compelling game of flashes of light – concealing and revealing at the same time. The scenes taken from reality turn, in the stroke of a brush, into a work of art. Rivka creates spots of light by means of quick and caressed brush strokes, powerful yet delicate, that in fact distort the sight of the objects themselves, nevertheless enhancing them: it is clear that there is a wall, but it is not there, there is a stain of a shadow and a spot of light and we perceive a wall in our imagination. Thus, by means of abstraction and minimal detail, a figurative painting of a passing scene emerges in front of us. Using many shades of color, yet in serene colorfulness, the various images gleam from the painting, as if one of us has just passed by that same scene. Ella Klier Ariel
